Lisa has had a long-standing interest in host-pathogen interactions and how the regulation of inflammation and immunity intersect. After completing her PhD (Ninan Abraham, UBC 2010), she pursued post-doctoral research with David Artis at the University of Pennsylvania where she received fellowship support from the Cancer Research Institute as an Edmond J Safra scholar. In 2015, she joined the Microbiology & Immunology department at UBC as the Canada Research Chair in Host-Microbiome Interactions.
Hana Robinson, PhD Candidate (09/2016 - )
The exact cause of the autoimmune neurodegenerative disease - Multiple Sclerosis - remains unknown, however susceptibility has been linked to environmental factors. Hannah is studying the impact of diet on multiple sclerosis and testing helminth excretory products as potential therapeutics for inflammatory diseases.
In her spare time, she likes to take photos of wildlife, dance, paint, play soccer and drink tea.
Blair Hardman, phd Candidate (01/2017 - )
The intestinal epithelium is the site of truly staggering amounts of interspecies interactions. Preventing infection while also maintaining intestinal homeostasis requires fine tuned cell to cell communication. This is true both among different immune cells and the epithelial cells that make up the bulk of the intestinal tissue. Using fluorescent microscopy in tandem with other techniques Blair’s project is attempting to characterize the underlying cellular conversations involved in viral responses in the intestine.
Blair is extremely curious and enjoys nothing more than the freedom to obsess in the lab. He plans on obtaining a PhD from UBC and continue his foray into academia. When not in the lab Blair plays hockey, gardens, and wanders aimlessly through the city and surrounding forest. Blair is an avid fly fisherman and spends as much time as possible wandering the coast and coastal rivers searching for salmon and solitude.
Andrew Sharon, PHD candidate (09/2017 - )
Andrew is studying how the immune signalling molecule STAT1 allows our body to control the viruses which inhabit our gut. Outside of the lab, Andrew leads science outreach programs for children and adults, and skis as much as possible.
Naomi Fettig, PHD candidate (09/2018 - )
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating chronic neurodegenerative disease that affects nearly 100 000 Canadians. The exact cause of MS remains unknown, although there is mounting evidence to suggest that environmental factors, including infection with Epstein-Barr virus and dysregulation of the gut microbiome, play important roles in disease progression. Naomi’s project explores the intersecting roles of these environmental factors and how they may interact with the host and each other to influence initiation and progression of MS.
Naomi is an avid hiker and spends her spare time getting fresh air in the mountains. She also enjoys playing volleyball, rock climbing, and cooking.

Jung Hee has been at UBC for over 10 years, and in our lab since 2015. Her extensive molecular biology, tissue culture and managerial skills keep this whole place running smoothly.
navid saleh, Honor's student (01/2018 - )
Navid began as a volunteer student in January of 2018 and is now eager to pursue a directed studies project with the mentorship of both Lisa and Blair. He is in his final year of the UBC Microbiology and Immunology Honours program. In the lab, Navid is interested in intestinal in-vitro models for testing the effects of helminth and viral infections. In his spare time, Navid loves going to the gym, and volunteering as a medical first responder!
Sarah Popple, Honor's student (09/2018 - )
Sarah's project focuses primarily on characterizing the immune cell responsible for initiating the adaptive response against specific viral infections in the gut using in vivo modelling and flow cytometry.
Outside of the lab Sarah spends as much time as possible hiking, particularly enjoying mountainous hikes along the west coast of BC and into Washington. She also enjoys beach sunsets, reading, and photography.
